As a nominee for this year's American Heart Association Leaders of Impact campaign, I'm committed to helping save lives and create a healthier future for our community, and I hope I can count on your support.
In 2013, I experienced heart failure due to a rare condition called Takotsubo syndrome. Just three months later, I had five mini-strokes that left me temporarily blind. Until then, I respected the American Heart Association, but suddenly its mission became part of my story.
I am here today because a friend recognized that something was seriously wrong and urged me to go to the emergency room. My experience showed me how lifesaving research, education, and awareness can give someone another chance at life. Today, you would never know by looking at me what I survived - and I know there are countless others whose lives have also been touched by heart disease and stroke.
Cardiovascular disease remains the No. 1 killer in the United States. Someone in our country dies from cardiovascular disease every 34 seconds. These aren't just statistics. They represent parents, spouses, children, friends, and families whose lives can change in an instant.
That is why I said yes to serving as a Leaders of Impact nominee. During this seven-week campaign, my team and I will raise awareness and critical funding to advance scientific research, expand CPR education and lifesaving training, and help remove barriers to better health.
I believe in this cause and in our ability to make an impact in our local community and across the country, and I’m asking for your support. Together, we can help more people recognize the warning signs, access the care they need, and have the opportunity to enjoy longer, healthier lives.
