On February 16, 2019 our beloved husband, father, and ‘Pappy,’ Ed Flannery, passed away from complications related to a congenital heart disorder. Unbeknownst to his parents and doctors at the time, Ed was born with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition which led him to have an abnormally large heart. He was formally diagnosed with this condition around 25 years ago during a routine doctor’s physical. Because of this disorder, Ed experienced issues with arrhythmia, or an irregular heart beat, throughout the course of his life. While this was managed mainly with medication after of his diagnosis, Ed was able to lead a normal lifestyle, sharing in many activities with his friends and family over the course of his life. He was able to maintain a career in industrial power, create a home, farm his own land, and enjoy many activities such as softball, boating, home and farm improvement, watching Westerns and traveling.
After many years of successfully treating his condition, Ed was later diagnosed with congestive heart failure, a condition which leads to weakening of the heart muscle, affecting its ability to pump blood to other parts of the body. This, in conjunction with prexisting complications, caused his heart to stop responding to traditional and advanced forms of treatment, and he ultimately succumbed to these conditions.
It is in his honor that we have created a memorial donation page with the American Heart Association to create awareness and promote the importance of research for heart-related healthcare. In our family we have always joked that Ed had a big heart, both figuratively and literally, which of course was his greatest asset. It is with very heavy hearts that we recognize how these conditions affected not only his life, but each our own with his untimely passing. We are grateful for the memories we have shared not only together, but with the wonderful groups of people that Ed has called friends and family throughout the years.
Thank you for your donation in Ed’s honor and for your part in helping to increase awareness for a condition which affected his life and those he loved, along with many other families experiencing similar issues related to cardiac conditions.
With warm hearts,
Darlene, Aaron, Lauren, and London
