My familiy has been plauged with heart disease for several generations. We have heart issues on both sides of my family but this is the story about my fathers side. My grandfather had a heart attack at age 54 and died as a result. Right before my father's 54th birthday he was starting to feel poorly and the doctor scheduled him to do a stress test. On his birthday he had the stress test done. During the stress test the doctor stopped the test and sent my dad directly to the hospital. My father was in the middle of a heart issue (my dad does not call it a heart attack). The doctors attempted to do an angioplasty and install stents but do to the amount of blockage he needed emergency bypass surgery. After numerous surgeries my dad survived but has permanent damage to his heart. A year or two ago he was told he needed a pacemaker due to the damage that has been done. Last month dad came down with the flu, he spent 27 days in the hospital and almost died. His heart is so bad (he has only 18% of his heart working) everything was shuting down. We are extremley lucky because my dad is a fighter.....he is a survivor. We know dad is on borrowed time but due to the research the American Heart Association does, my dad has been given more time to be with his family. My entire family is greatful for all that the Heart Association does.
