Many of you have family members or know someone who's been affected by heart disease or stroke. My family has suffered from these heath issues as well. I'm running the 2018 Chicago Marathon for them and our future, and hope you will support my effort by making a donation to the American Heart / American Stroke Association.
Two years ago, my mother Gale died from stroke, ulimately a result of heart disease. She had a defective mitral valve and a weak heart from poor genetics and years of smoking. The valve was replaced twice, she had a pacemaker installed, and lived with the assistance of oxygen tanks. After coping with these issues for the better part of four years, her body finally gave out. I'm running this marathon Mom!
My mother's brother suffered a stroke in 2004. He was confined to a wheel chair and had full-time care for seven years until his death in 2011. One of the most decorated soldiers in US military history, he could not fight this silent killer. I'll never forget running my first race with him in 1988. I'm running this marathon for Uncle John!
Others in my family have been affected as well. My grandfather died from complications of heart disease, and my mother's oldest brother recently survived a minor stroke. I'm running this marathon for Grandpa Shali and Uncle Joe!
Thanks for reading my family's story, I would be most grateful for your help in fighting heart disease and stroke.
