1 in 4 - That's the mortality rate of heart disease. The first number in those stats didn't mean as much to us until it became very personal with the loss of Denise. She was the best mother, sister and more importantly friend anyone could ask for to be part of their life. Anyone that knew her would say she was an amazing woman by any standard.
The statistic that's not as well-known is - 80% of heart disease related deaths are preventable.
The first step in making an impact is letting people know the problem and how SEVERE it is. We are running under the American Heart Association in the Chicago Marathon this year (team name: Run with Heart) in October, and have pledged to raise $3,000 in donations. This donation will serve the largest organization in the United States whose focus is not only raising awareness but as well as combatting heart disease.
In memory of Denise and all others affected by heart disease, we are having custom shirts created for the race with names and personal messages of those affected. Whether you donate or not, we would be honored to add your personal message.
