Me and my 3 kids have called Anchorage Alaska our home for the past 17 years and I have enjoyed participating in the Alaska Heart Run for 14 of those years. Troubled times struck our family in 2008 when I found myself divorced, raising my kids, and working full time to make ends meet. Over the next 8 years Life continued for me in Alaska as a single parent. Then, one day in February, 2016, I met a wonderful, bald-headed, country music lovin', kind hearted, gentle, man who treated me like a queen, and instantly our hearts connected. We loved spending time together enjoying the great Alaskan outdoors every chance we could get. Roger was a physically active man who was constantly on the go. He loved hikes and walks, and especially loved the sport of fishing. He rarely was ever sick and he certainly didn't show any signs of heart disease. Finally, May 6, 2017, we exchanged wedding vows and began our life together as we grabbed a second chance at love for the both of us. Just 12 short weeks after saying, "I do", we spent our first night apart as Roger left our home for what was supposed to be 1 day on the Chitna River to catch his fish limit for the end of the salmon run. It was the next day, July 26th, early in the morning, when Roger hauled up his net full of fish into the boat, and without any warning,he collapsed and suffered a major heart attack which took his life at age 55. Even though our time together was short, we created some of the most beautiful memories together. One of my fondest times to remember was at the Alaska Heart Run 2016. Even though running was not something Roger enjoyed doing at that time in his life, he ran for me because he knew I loved it. This year, I will run for him. The Alaska Heart Run 2018 will have a more powerful and personal meaning for me as every step I take will remind me of my sweet Roger. Please join me in running for a reason to help raise money and awareness for heart disease. Wear a camoflouge t-shirt to honor and remember Roger, and look for the "TEAM ROGER" sign at the starting line. Together we will make a difference at the Alaska Heart Run 2018!
