Why TEDY'S TEAM?
Tedy Bruschi suffered a stroke in February 2005, at the age of 31, just weeks after winning his 3rd Super Bowl. As he recovered, Tedy committed himself to being an advocate, spokesperson, and inspiration for stroke survivors so he created “Tedy’s Team" and asked the American Stroke Association to partner to raise money and awareness for stroke.
Tedy's Team is an endurance training team, a group of runners raising money for the American Stroke Association that train to complete the Boston Marathon.
Since 2012, I've been the captain of Team Beyond and Back helping to raise almost $38,000 to spread awareness about stroke and heart disease as well as healthy-living habits. The team was created to honor my late father and best friend, Jeffery L. Griffin who at age 25 fought a massive heart attack, then at age 45, a heart stroke, and then at age 51, he successfully received a heart-transplant.
The team name [beyond and back] was my dad’s email address as he thought the phrase best described his journey. Post-transplant my family received 5 extra years with dad. He passed when I was only 23 years old but wholeheartedly believe my life would not be what it is today had I not had his love and guidance those last 5 years. Team Beyond and Back is committed to helping others also get extra time. Before I die, the ultimate goal is to raise $100K to not only payback the cost of my dad's heart transplant but also drive breakthrough research to develop another innovative procedure enabling another person's loved one to be present during their life's pivotal moments.
The most valuable lesson I learned through Dad’s journey was perseverance and to never give up on your goals. In July 2016 I set a goal to qualify for the Boston Marathon. After thousands of training miles coupled with multiple failed race attempts, I qualified for the 2019 Boston Marathon with 3-hour 2-minute 50-seconds time.
With a shared mission and to prepare for the 2019 Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15th, Team Beyond and Back joined Tedy’s Team to raise $26,200 and in honor of the 26.2 mile marathon distance.
We hope you will join us on the journey!
