At the American Heart Association, we’ve committed to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% and reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke by 20%, all by the year 2020. Our current trajectory indicates we will not reach the 20% improvement of health goal for the Buffalo Region. With heart disease still being the #1 killer and incidence of stroke higher than the national rate as the #3 killer in our community we must come together to solve these complex underlying issues giving rise to the current projection that puts this generation and generations to come at risk.
There is no quick fix to solve these issues and we know to accelerate change we need to take a new approach - one that is focused on the day-to-day, year-round effort to improve health in our community - we call that Healthy for Good.
As the culture of health is changing in WNY, AHA is uniquely positioned to make an impact and that means lending our expertise to elevate the health of our community.
With that we recognize there will be departures from AHA’s traditional approach. We will be engaging in more mission-related and education focused activities that will address health disparities and social determinants of health through our Healthy for Good and Go Red for Women campaigns, our quality improvement and systems change programs, investment in scientific research, our youth initiatives, advocacy and more.
*As such we have decided to forego the upcoming Heart Walk event day scheduled for October 7, 2017.
We want to assure you that the dollars you have raised will still be used for the very same purpose you intended of funding our life-saving mission. The website will remain active until October 31st.
