My grandmother once told me:: “Everybody’s got to die of something” (She also said don’t count your chicks before they’re hatched, too, but I digress). She was right; we will. But the question has to be: does it have to be Heart Disease, the number one cause of death for women?
I want to tell you about Tara, a dear friend and valued colleague of mine whose life long journey monitoring her the problems with her heart reached a point when something needed to be done. It could have killed her because her doctors dismissed her worsening symptoms. Thankfully she didn’t give up and fortunately found a team who would listen. Now she has a new team, a team wanting to join her to fight the disease that almost took her life.
What you need to know: Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women. Heart disease unfairly targets women, who have been left out of research, testing, treatment and funding. Women have been underrepresented, undertreated and undercounted. But it doesn't have to be this way. The American Heart Association Go Red for Women movement's Woman of Impact campaign is working to change that. Because there's one source of support women can always count on --each other.
Together, we can engage more women in research. We can fight for access to care and treatments. And we can be a catalyst to create health solutions with women's unique health needs in mind, supporting them through every age, stage and season of life.
The time is now. Please stand beside me and join the change-makers against Heart Disease. Please support my campaign and click the donate button above.
