In my life, there is a very special little boy named Leo. He was born perfect, from his beautiful brown eyes and the biggest smile you have ever seen on a child to being full of energy, wonder, and joy. At just nine months old, during a routine visit with his pediatrician, the echo of a heart murmur from a stethoscope changed everything. Without delay, the family was referred to a cardiologist where we would learn Leo had an atrial septal defect - a hole in his heart that would not close. Leo’s family leaned into the confidence they had in the medical community.
What was profound about Leo’s case was that there were no warning signs. He had a wonderful appetite, healthy weight, and about as much energy as his parents could handle—atypical given the severity of his defect. Heart surgery was required on this precious little boy to save his life. Thankfully, his surgery was successful, and Leo never missed a beat! Today, Leo is six years old, thriving, determined, generous, and truly has the biggest heart.
Leo's situation isn't entirely uncommon; however, heart disease is pervasive. His unavoidable adversity opened up my eye to all of the proactive steps people can take to take care of themselves. There are dozens of children that require closure devices each year. Heart health impacts so many families whether it is defects at birth or heart disease developing over a lifetime. Astoundingly, the number one cause of death is heart disease, causing one in three deaths each year. Nearly 45 percent of women are living with some form of cardiovascular disease, and often unknowingly. Heart health is unmistakably critical, and education around heart health is vital! This is why I am supporting the American Heart Association.
