TEAM TEKEIA!
I’m proud to be on a team of changemakers making a real impact on the state of women’s health.
Tekeia and I have known each other for decades and unfortunately we connected further as a result of our own stories related to Cardiovascular disease and complications from heart health issues for our families.
My why is more personal - I have pre-ventricular contractions and recently developed issues with higher blood pressure as a result of increased risk. You see, women that have had gestational diabetes, or preeclampsia during their pregnancies are at increased risk of heart related problems later in life and during menopause.
I check all of those boxes.
Even more importantly, it affects women of color at double or more the rate of other women. And only 7% of the research done only over the last 30 years has been performed on women of color. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Because the American Heart Association Go Red for Women movement’s Woman of Impact campaign is working to change that.
It’s not just about wearing red. The time is now. Are you with me?
