On February 1st, 2018, my life changed forever when I dropped dead at work of sudden cardiac arrest. No warning signs. No pre-existing conditions. A perfectly healthy 28 year old.
My life was saved by CPR/AED-trained individuals, and within two weeks, I was back at work thanks to their heroism.
The same day that I returned home from the hospital, I contacted the American Heart Association via their website. Within an hour, I was on the phone with someone, and they have been an amazing support system for me ever since then!
As soon as I went back to work, the American Heart Association became a lifeline for me. They have provided friendship and support, and have continued to fund research and campaigns that save lives: lives like mine and my son Easton's.
What I love most about the American Heart Association is that they have contributed more money to heart research than anyone else: including the CDC! Research is what moves us forward, and makes a longer life more accessible to those with heart disease.
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women. The American Heart Association Go Red for Women movement's Woman of Impact campaign is working to change that.
Heart disease unfairly targets women, who have been left out of research, testing, treatment and funding. Women have been underrepresented, undertreated and undercounted. But it doesn't have to be this way. Because there's one source of support women can always count on - each other.
Together, we can engage more women in research. We can fight for access to care and treatments. And we can be a catalyst to create health solutions with women's unique health needs in mind, supporting them through every age, stage and season of life.
It's not just about wearing red. It's not just about sharing heart health facts. It's about all women connecting and committing to stand together against our greatest health threat.
