Participating in Leaders of Impact is personally important to me because I've seen that scientific research and heart disease medications can save lives.
When our youngest daughter, Amelia, was eleven months old, we were told that she had a 50% chance of either dying or needing a heart transplant within 5 years, due to her severe dilated cardiomyopathy. In the months and years that followed, Amelia's amazing care team at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh guided Amelia through a meticulous medication regimen, including two different clinical trials, that would eventually improve her heart function. Not to say we're out of the woods, but her DCM is now classified as mild, leaving us better able to focus care on her intellectual disability and autism. We know how incredibly fortunate we are and will forever be grateful.
