I walk because I know that with every step, I am saving lives.
In 2010 my husband Eddie had a stroke, the doctors told me that with intense physical therapy, most likely, he would be walking, talking and going back to some of his regular activities in 8 to 12 months.
We had no idea that it would be just the beginning of our journey. One of Eddie's cardiologists had told us a few years before that Eddie would need a new heart sometime in the next decade, at that time I paused, took a deep breath and decided to take one day at time, enjoying and appreciating each and every moment. Our daughter was just 5 years old and I was decided to live our best life, making the best possible memories to all of us.
At the end of 2016, we were told that Eddie would need a new heart very soon. From exams, to doctor's consultations, counseling and an army of friends and family's prayers, we moved fast onto 2017, entering a new battlefield. We were hopeful and well supported, but definitely fearful, facing the uncertainty of what the future had reserved for us. We endured very trying times, long months of hospitalization and agonizing waiting.
On April, 17th of 2017, God gave Eddie's third chance. Dr. David D'Alessandro, accompanied by his amazing team at MGH, completed a 9 hours, very successful operation procedure, placing a beautiful, fully functioning new heart into Eddie's chest.
We are all tied to heart disease and stroke in some way. We have to change that.
