Help me be a Heart Walk Hero!
Well, it'll be 7 years in February when I faced that terrible reality - I was having a heart attack. Fortunately, I was able to get the necessary care quickly and obviously survived. It still rattles me to the core when I think back to the experience and recall my cardiologist saying "You are a lucky guy - you dodged a bullet". Unfortunately this is not always the case for some people and I think I can say with some certainty that most people know someone who has not survived cardiac arrest. In fact, as I celebrate another year as a survivor, I have witnessed yet more people that have not been so lucky.
After I had my heart attack I got a call from an acquaintance who was also my age. He had suffered an attack in his late 30's. He called me to talk about his experience and to answer any questions I might have. It was such a kind, informative and comforting gesture - one that I will never forget. Unfortunately, that same guy (in his mid 50's) had a second heart attack and didn't survive. The thought of a second attack is terrifying which is one of the reasons why I support the American Heart Association. Because they educate, provide awareness and help people that have been affected by heart disease, I have chosen to raise money by walking again this year.
