Today is #NationalWalkingDay, so I felt it appropriate to honor my Uncle George.
I always thought of him as a relatively healthy man…. Never smoked, he drank an occasional beer now and then, and ate the most healthiest food. He and his family moved to Rochester NY when I was young, but he always came to visit often to see my grandparents and all of us. It was always a treat to meet him at the small regional airport in Lincoln, and watch him land his small plane, (and take off again, a few days later).
But this healthy man, needed a quadruple bypass forty years ago. With lots of prayers, and help from his family, he recovered…. And in the process of recovery, his doctor told him to walk. And he did. He walked… and walked… and walked every day to regain his strength. And a year later, shortly after my own dad passed away from heart disease, Uncle George walked from Rochester, New York, to Woonsocket, RI to attend a family reunion and visit with family. And along the way, he visited with local people he met in cafes, coffee shop and local businesses, and raised money for the American Heart Association.
I’m walking in an upcoming heart walk in June, and I humbly ask you to consider donating to my team.
