In 2022 when being discharged after giving birth to my daughter, my OB/GYN heard what sounded like a heart murmur. Flash forward about 3 1/2 months later and after multiple tests and appointments, I was undergoing open heart surgery to repair a congenital heart defect. This is not how I envisioned motherhood starting our for me and being somone with no signs or symptoms it definitely came as a shock not only to myself, but to my family and friends as well. After reciving my diagnosis I knew I wanted to try to get involved and support others who my be going through their own heart journey. I ended up dsicovering that there was a Maine Heart Walk that took place each spring. I signed up for the event and through that decision I ended up connecting with someone from the American Heart Association of Maine, which has led to other opportunities and events, as well as the chance to meet other survivors. This May I will be participating in the Maine Heart Walk for the 3rd year in a row to help raise awearness and support those who have been impacted by cardiovascular disease. I have seen first and all that the American Heart Association of Maine does and I am proud to be able to support them and their commitment to education, raising awareness, continuing research, and supporting those impacted by heart disease and stroke.
