My Why: Walking for Hearts, Health, and Hope
In July 2025, I will proudly celebrate my 9th anniversary as a volunteer board member for the American Heart & Stroke Association (Erie Division). I’m also honored to serve as the local Mission Chair, advocating for healthier lives in my community.
Throughout my journey, I’ve been recognized with the 'Voice of the Mission' Health Equity Leadership Award in the Eastern States region and appointed to the National Diversity Leadership Committee—both opportunities that have allowed me to amplify the message of health equity and awareness on a larger scale.
But my mission is deeply personal.
I walk in memory of my dad, Richard "Rich" Brotherson. In 2007, he suffered a massive heart attack at the young age of 49. We were preparing to celebrate his 50th birthday—a milestone he never reached. Losing him so suddenly and tragically changed my perspective on life and fueled my passion for raising awareness.

I also walk in honor of my beloved grandma, Marlene Church, who recently passed away from heart and lung complications. At just 75 years old, her health declined rapidly due to high blood pressure and related issues. Her passing was another heartbreaking reminder of the importance of proactive heart health.

These experiences have shaped my dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles—not only for myself but for my family, friends, and community. I walk for:
❤ Those battling heart disease today.
Those we’ve lost too soon.
Those whose futures we can protect through awareness and education.
But I’m not just walking—I’m Heartwalking. Each step I take supports the Heart Walk’s mission to encourage physical activity, healthier choices, and ultimately, to reduce death and disability from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
Imagine the impact if we could prevent just 20% of cardiovascular-related deaths through awareness, prevention, and lifestyle changes. Together, we can make that vision a reality.
Thank you for supporting this mission and for being part of the fight for healthier hearts everywhere.
