I wanted to participate this year as I reach my 1 year anniversary of open heart surgery.
In my late 20s, I found out that I had a congenital heart defect. I was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve. I was shocked to say the least. No one in my family that I am aware of has the same problem but I was assured that it was congenital. My son and sister have all been tested since my diagnosis.
I had annual ECGs and in my mid 40s the condition became moderate. Then after another test in 2024, it was discovered that I had developed an aortic aneurysm due to the inefficiency of my valve. A few months later, it was determined I needed open heart surgery.
I am so grateful to have these extra days and I continue to be vigilant about my cardio health. The research and procedures that are available continue to save lives.
