Heart health goes hand in hand with the wellness of our brains and nervous system. Everyone knows that our heart is responsible for pumping blood throughout our bodies, and the brain is dependent on getting a steady supply of nutrients and oxygen via the blood to function. Heart failure and atrial fibrillation can reduce the amount of blood reaching the brain, leading to cognitive issues and possible stroke. Many risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity are also linked to brain health as they impact the quality and quantity of blood getting to the brain.
What can we do to improve our heart and brain health?
-
Eat a heart healthy diet. Limit processed foods, added sugar and salt. Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables.
-
Manage your stress. Reducing your stress can enhance your memory, attention span, and problem-solving skills. Practicing stress-reducing activities regularly can lower your body's response to stress, enhancing the brain's ability to adapt and recover from stress.
-
See your doctor regularly. Annual wellness visits with a primary care physician can identify abnormalities before they become serious problems. They can assess your health and create a personalized health plan with your goals in mind!
-
Increase your physical activity. Regular physical activity is good for your heart, muscles, and bones. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, each week.
