I never thought I would be on this end of such an important mission. After my father had a heart attack 12 years ago, and did not survive, I decided to get myself checked. Everything was ok for about 10 years before I started to have additional concerns about my health. I sought out a new cardiologist and it became apparent to my doctor that something wasn't right. Additional testing was needed to evaluate my health.
Things went quickly after that. Before I knew it, I went from an evaluation procedure, to having a triple by-pass. If it wasn't for the latest research, technology, early detection and self advocacy, I may not be here today.
I attended my first Heart Walk last year and when I walked up to one of the booths, they asked me if I was a survivor, I hesitated for a moment and said yes, I am a survivor. I didn't think of myself in that way, but I know now that I am lucky and I hold on to those words with pride.
I walk for the hopes that others will be able to say the same thing as me.
