Why I walk

I walk for this cause because cardiovascular health has shaped much of my career and my life. I began my work caring for children in a cardiac ICU, and later moved into research focused on improving outcomes in cardiovascular disease and cardiac arrest.

Over the years, I have seen too many children and adults who did not receive CPR or emergency cardiovascular care in time—some passed away, and others were left with lifelong disabilities. One loss that stays close to my heart is my young cousin, who died at the age of 40 from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. I walk for him, and for all those who did not get the chance they deserved.

Did you know that 9 out of 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside the hospital do not survive? In many cases, bystander CPR can make the difference between life and death.

Cardiac arrests happen at work, in homes, on athletic fields and in neighborhoods everywhere, and the readiness of our community can be the difference between life and death.

Through the Vermont Heart Walk, we support the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association—funding CPR education, research, and prevention programs that help turn bystanders into lifesavers. It's time to unite, take action, and save lives. Every walker who joins, every dollar donated, means more people trained in lifesaving CPR, more research and more lifesaving moments for everyone.
