The beautiful young lady in my profile picture is not a picture of me, but a picture of my sister, Kaitlyn. She is not what most people imagine when they think of someone with heart problems, which is why it's important to me to highlight her story. Kaitlyn has been going through serious health problems since before she was a teenager. She has been to countless doctors and received multiple diagnoses. She and my parents have dedicated innumerable hours to traveling and sitting through unhelpful and frustrating appointments. She has suffered for years on end from an unidentified ailment that dominates her life and causes her unimaginable difficulties. Most people don't think twice about walking up a flight of stairs, or using a rolling pin to make cookies, but these are challenges that Kaitlyn faces on a daily basis because her body is physically unable to handle the exertion. When it was finally discovered that she has a heart condition, my parents took her to Cleveland clinic to seek answers and treatment. She has a complicated case, and we don't have all of the answers yet. We do know that she has a high grade AV Block, and according to her internal heart monitor, her heart rate sometimes drops as low as 18 beats per minute. She has a heart ablation surgery scheduled for March 3rd, with the hope that this will help her symptoms and prevent her from needing a pacemaker this early in life. This is not the end of her journey, but we are grateful to have a path forward, and we are thankful to finally be aware of her heart issues. Heart conditions are not limited to a certain demographic, and I would like to raise awareness for all heart conditions, but especially for those that affect young people. I walk for my sister, because she cannot. I walk in hopes that others will not be forced to endure the same hardships that Kaitlyn has faced.
