My grandpa was an amazing guy. Unfortunately, he passed away from an unexpected heart attack when I was only 12 years old. My mom still says that 2006 was the worst year of her life. At the time, I did not fully understand what had happened.
Fast-forward to 2014, I was studying abroad in Valencia, Spain. I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to intern with a cardiologist and practice my medical terminology in Spanish. One patient in particular, had a huge impact on me. He came in for a routine post-operative visit to see how he was healing. He was SO thankful to be alive, and ready to make life changes.
After his operation he started a hiking group with friends and family to help people get active & learn the signs of heart disease. A friend and I attended one of their hikes, and that day something changed for me—after 15 miles and many hours, I knew that exercise, in combination with healthy eating was crucial to preventing this from happening to others.
I am walking for more time with friends and family. I am walking to make sure nobody else goes through the pain of losing a loved one from something that could have been prevented. I am walking to promote a healthier lifestyle.
For every dollar I raise, I will run one mile; because every step counts.
