I’m beyond hopeful that the healthy choices I make, including diet and exercise, and the early detection and prevention actions I take through routine medical follow ups, will reduce my chances of heart related traumas that run in my family. My actions and choices are driven by decades of research by the AHA; the AHA does amazing work to educate, fund research, and advance our abilities to treat and prevent heart related illnesses!
A decade
ago, my dad suffered a severe stroke. While in the hospital, he deteriorated significantly to the point where he was not expected to make it (less than 5% chance), but thanks to a great team of doctors and nurses, quite a few prayers, and my dad being a hell of a fighter, he pulled through and today enjoys a life filled with the laughter and smiles of his grandkids! He continues to keep a close eye on his body and his heart, suffering a mild heart attack in early 2021 resulting from a collapsed stent place over 20 years ago, but he knew something wasn’t right and caught it early and was back on his feet three days later. That’s a total of three heart attacks, with the earliest being in his mid-40s, and a stroke, so we’re incredibly fortunate to have him with us, but I know the skill of the doctors and nurses and the technologies and techniques they used to save my dad wouldn't have been what they were without the support and research of the American Heart Association! I choose to run, attempt to eat healthier, and (yes) take medication in an attempt to avoid the heart related issues my dad has faced, but its also a great opportunity to raise awareness and support the AHA.
