Wow! I can't believe I've celebrated 12 years since my heart attack!
I now call May 7th my new birthday as it was on that day in 2009 I was home alone and scared, and woke up to a massive heart attack. But God (prayerfull pause) sent some angels into my life, who saved me, not because it was their job, but because of their life-saving skills in CPR and medical training for heart patients.
I thought the story ended there. However 11 years later, on Monday October 5, 2020 my pacemaker/defibrillator shocked me 12 times in succession. It felt like lightning exploded inside my chest. Again, I was home alone and scared as it had never gone off since implanted back in 2009. Yet the device did what is was designed to do - it saved my life!
Today as I'm setting up my page for this year's Heart Walk on October 17, 2021 my heart is full with gratitude because I was the fortunate recipient of the best care from some of the world's most compassionate and caring Health Care professionals and staff at both RWJ Barnabas Health in Livingston and Rahway, along with St. Michael's in Newark, NJ.
Why am I telling you this? Because YOUR LIFE IS WHY! I don't believe what I progressed through was for me to keep to myself. I DO believe it is to share with others so you may be encouraged to take precautionary measures to safeguard your family and friends from the pain and suffering of what I have had to deal with. During the past year, I met one too many families who lost loved ones who were seemingly healthy to heart attacks.
The American Heart Association plays a key role in heart health awareness through education seminars, fundraising and encouraging people to "just move". The Annual Northern NJ HeartWalk will be held on October 17, 2021 at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ.
While I would love your donations, I'd also like you to come out and walk with me (and tell your friends as well). We will have provisions for social distancing and if you prefer, ways to participate virtually.
Should you consider donating to my Heart Walk campaign, you get something back that's priceless - satisfaction knowing your donation helped fund research that could one day cure heart disease and stroke. So, do your heart some good and please make a donation today!
