The phrase "we hear a strange murmur," uttered by one perceptive nurse just before Jamie was about to be discharged after he was born saved and changed his life. Turns out, Jamie had a VSD (hole in his heart), the placement of which caused other structural abnormalities in his heart. He had open heart surgery just shy of his 2-month birthday to fix that pesky hole and check out the situation with the rest of his sweet little heart. That surgery was complicated with a stroke and seizures. Luckily he was at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, which has some of the best doctors on the planet. They stepped in to save the day!
Though Jamie has to bond with his (amazing) cardiologist a couple times a year, he is a happy and thriving 3-year-old, who loves dinosaurs, asking 1000 questions a minute (ie, "Is that a banana?...Is that banana yellow?...Can I please eat that banana?") and snacking nonstop (again, ie, the banana). This year, I'm walking for Jamie and all the other heart warriors out there.
