Many of you may not know "My Why" for getting involved with the AHA.
My brother, Stacey, passed away in 2010 of Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy. He had an enlarged heart that was undiagnosed. For many years he was overweight. One of his annual doctor's appointment his physician gave him the hard talk about his weight., telling him that he might need to go on diabetes medication. My brother quickly made a life change after understanding how serious his physician spoke to him. He started with Weight Watchers, fun compeitions with some of the ladies he worked with and also read books on healthy dieting. He was quite an avid reader. He also went on to be the inspirational "boot camp" workout warrior. He inspired others to be healthy and lose weight. I forgot to mention what an infectious personality he had. He was loved by everyone who met him, men, women and pets!
After a couple of years of healthy lifestyle choices he had a massive heart attack at the age of 47. One of the signs for my brother that we never questioned, was his shortness of breath (even on a regular daily walk). My brother's passing was a life changing event for all of our family. Most importanlty his wife, Helen and three children, Jimmy, Cassandra and Jennifer. his passing happened a week before his youngest daughters high school graduation.
So, "My Why" is in memory of my brother to help others be educated on heart health. To not ingnore the signs that your heart may be giving you even though you may be the healthiest person in your family or circle of friends.
