I am taking part in this year's Heart Walk because, out of nowhere, on March 22 of this year, I suffered a heart attack at 48. I felt 'not right' for about 24 hours, but couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. I thought I was just anxious about something... Turns out, I was in the midst of a 'widowmaker' heart attack, with 100% blockage to the main artery of my heart, caused from a blood clot. The survival rate for this type of heart attack is about 12%, so I am very lucky to be able to walk this year, alongside the lovely people I have met at Cardiac Rehab.
9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital die. In most of those cases, bystander CPR was not performed. But we can change this.
Cardiac arrests happen at work, in homes, on athletic fields and in neighborhoods everywhere, and the readiness of our community can be the difference between life and death.
It's time to unite, take action, and save lives. Every dollar donated, means more people trained in lifesaving CPR, more research and more lifesaving moments for everyone. Together, we can turn bystanders into lifesavers.
I Walk to Save Lives. Help me reach my goal today.
