Why We Run
2021 (GWR) Lawyers Have Heart 10k Race, 5K Run, and Fun Walk
Team S&S (Virtual)
On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013, I went into cardiac arrest while running a Turkey Trot 5K in St. Paul, Minnesota. The picture above was taken just a few minutes before it happened. My wife Lisa was four and a half months pregnant with our first child Connor at the time. I was in a coma for 10 days, and to quote my doctor, I came “about as close to dying as a person can get without actually dying.” I had no prior history of heart issues, and my doctors at the Mayo Clinic still have not figured out what caused my cardiac arrest.
The survival rate for an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest like what I had is about 10%, and many of the 10% that do survive have lasting brain damage. When in cardiac arrest, a person’s chance of survival decreases by 7%-10% for every minute they go without life-saving CPR and defibrillation. Thanks to quick CPR and the availability of an AED (Automated external defibrillator), I was one of the lucky ones who survived without any long lasting effects.
To raise money and awareness for heart health, including CPR and AED training, I have formed this team for the 2021 Lawyers Have Heart 10k Race, 5K Run, and Fun Walk, which raises money for the American Heart Association. Please consider supporting my team by either joining as a runner or by donating to the team.
Even more importantly, please consider doing CPR and emergency first aid training with your families. Here are some links to where you can find classes, including online options.
