Congenital heart disease (CHD) impacts every 1 in 100 newborns and is 50 times more common than childhood cancer. Congenital heart disease involves problems with the heart's structure or the way that it works and is present at birth. 25% of children born with CHD require heart surgery or other interventions in the first year of life in order to survive. There is NO cure to CHD and patients require specialized care for their entire life. Most causes of CHD are unknown, with only about 15-20% being related to known genetic conditions.

The American Heart Association has an alliance with The Children's Heart Foundation to fund grants for CHD research and provide support groups to caregivers.
