This year marks my first participation in the Triangle Walk, guided by my beloved late Grandfather Dwayne E. Anderson, who passed away on June 11, 2024. He was my silent yet towering hero, an esteemed Vietnam War Army Veteran, and a cherished Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather.
Throughout the last five years, my grandfather bravely battled heart and lung complications, which ultimately led to his untimely passing at the age of 76. His fighting spirit endured until the very end. Such moments are truly indescribable. In his final days, I had the privilege of spending precious time with him, surrounded by dedicated healthcare professionals who supported him and our family during this challenging period.
My Grandpa was like most people - every day people. He found joy in collecting and reading Black history articles, watching action movies, walking, cooking, savoring coffee or a strong drink, but above all, in spending quality time with his family.
Participating in this fundraising walk is my way of creating new memories with him and initiating conversations with those who might feel weary, scared, or unsure about addressing their health issues. Remember, you are not alone – there is a whole community standing with you.
This is in honor of Dwayne “Pops” Anderson, my Grandpa.
