As a result of Brenda being President of the Columbia AHA Board, Brenda and Rick volunteered to be the chairs of the first American Heart Walk in Columbia in the fall of 1998. Brenda had been involved with the Heart Association because her sweet father died of heart disease at the age of 56 just three years post triple bypass surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 1983. Since that time, heart medicine has improved so greatly due to research funded by AHA. We both take medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol that simply was not developed in the early '80's. South Carolina is fortunate to have excellent resources for treatment of heart disease and stroke.
Last year, we, along with 4 members of the Logistics Committee who have served on every Walk since inception, Co-Chaired the Midlands Heart Walk and it was the best Midland Walk ever! Let's make the 2025 Walk even better!!
Everyone knows someone who has died or survived heart disease and stroke and we walk in order to raise more funds for research. Most of the funds raised in South Carolina are used in South Carolina for research grants.
We're all tied to heart disease and stroke in some way. We have to change that. Will you help us?
Your donation will fund groundbreaking research that literally keeps hearts beating and helps people have longer, healthier lives.
Have a heart and help us reach our goal today!
