I am walking for the American Heart Association because this mission is deeply personal to me and my family. My daughter, Rachel was born with a congenital heart defect called Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD). At just four months old, she underwent her first open heart surgery. No parent is ever prepared to hand their baby over to a surgical team, but her strength and resilience carried her through that incredibly difficult time.
Years later, at 13 years old, Rachel faced another major challenge when she needed a second open heart surgery to replace her valve. What we thought would be a shorter recovery turned into 13 days in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit, full of uncertainty and prayers. She came home with a pacemaker-another reminder of how much she has endured and how far she has come.
The American Heart Association is leading the way in advancing research, education, and support for children and families like ours. Every step I take in this walk is for Rachel, and all the kids who face battles with congenital heart disease. By walking, I'm helping fund the research and resources that give children a better chance at healthy, full lives. Rachel is living proof of the importance of continued progress, and I am walking with gratitude for her journey and hope for the future.
Please help me reach my goal today by joining our team or donating towards our goal. Together, we can turn bystanders into lifesavers.
