I was ten years old when knowledge of heart health (or lack thereof) became a reality. My father suffered a massive fatal heart attack at the age of 49. The autopsy said his heart was "that of a 90 year old". Although he appeared fit and healthy, my dad wasn't the healthiest eater. The hereditary cards, I believe, were also stacked against him. My family was devasted. He was the outgoing, life of the party and my mother, the reserved passive one. I guess the silver lining is that I got closer to my german, "close to the vest" mother that I probably ever would have. I've gone throught the anger and sadness and am now empowered to be healthy and help spread the word about the importance of heart health. I became a certifided personal training and group fitness instructor at an early age and have been dedicated to teaching fitness classes, and maintaining a healthy lifestlye. Five years ago, I wasn't feeling well while teaching a class and went to my doctor. After an EKG and meetings with a cardiologist, I was diagnosed with AFLUTTER and AFIB. My doctor said although my heart is strong, the "electricity is wacked". I also found out that I have high Choresterol. The good choresterol (HDL) is high, but the bad (LDL) is also. I began a littany of medications. This past April I had a Pulse Field Ablastion. This surgery was to get my heart back in rythm. I am happy to report the surgery my heart electriphysiologist (thanks Dr . William T. Smith) did was a success. I am off one of the meds and need to wait a few more months to see if I can discontinue some others.
I know this successful surgery isn't a guarantee, but I am hopeful with continued exercise, healthy eathing, and managing stress, I can continue with the one heart I've got and keep it pumping!
Thank you for coming to walk with me October 18th and/or donating. This local Wilmington, NC based American Heart Association has consistantly raised money that towards local research grants, providing CPR kits and training in local schools, and so much more. Recently, a UNCW doctor was able to utilize this grant money to study brain recovery after a stroke. Yes, heart health isn't just about heart attacks.
Come join me in the fight to educate, empower, and annihilate heart disease!
