In 1994, my grandfather, Robert C. Barrett Sr., known lovingly as “Paw”, underwent open-heart triple bypass surgery that saved his life. It is because of organizations like the American Heart Association, which fund critical cardiovascular research, that his surgery became a success story.
Not everyone is given the gift of time the way I was. When my mother was just 11 years old, she lost her grandfather suddenly to a fatal heart attack. There was no warning and no chance to say goodbye. That loss stayed with her throughout her life, and the lesson of that experience has stayed with me thorough mine.
The message is simple but powerful: the greatest gift we can give others is the gift of time.
Because of medical advancements and lifesaving research, I was given 20 more years with my Paw. Twenty years of hugs and kisses, conversations, laughter, and memories that I will forever cherish. I am deeply grateful to organizations like the American Heart Association for the incredible progress made in cardiovascular health and research. This is why their mission resonates so deeply with me, because it gave me time, and time gave me everything.
The Heart Walk is truly a family affair for me.
