2026 West Alabama Heart Walk
Luke Kniphfer
Every 15 minutes a baby is born with a congenital heart defect. That’s 40,000 babies a year in the U.S. alone. That’s 1 out of every 110 babies which makes CHD the most common birth defect in America. 25% of those babies will need surgery in the first year of life to survive.
Our Luke was one of those babies. He not only needed one surgery within his first year of life, he needed two.
Luke was born April 16, 2020 and had his first open heart surgery at just 7 days old and survived two cardiac arrest episodes. He had a heart catheter procedure at 3 months old, before his next open heart surgery at 4 months old. We just completed another heart catheter procedure back in June of this year, along with his last planned open heart surgery. Luke has had an incredible recovery from all of his procedures and surgeries. We are blessed to have such an amazing Children’s hospital so close to home and are forever grateful for everything they do for Luke along with the financial support they receive from The American Heart Association!
