Heart disease and heart conditions don't always look the way you expect.
I had my daughter in my mid-30s, and her birth brought on pre-eclampsia while revealing a heart condition that typically resolves after delivery. Mine didn't.
For more than a decade, I wore an imaginary mask - hiding the reality that my heart was, to put it lightly, a LOT wonky. Most people had no idea what my family and I were facing behind the scenes.
Then, in December 2021, everything changed. My heart rate dropped dangerously low, and I collapsed into my bathroom tub, breaking four ribs. The months that followed brought more challenges, including nightly seizures, falls, and a fear I never imagined facing.
With the help of an incredible medical team, my family's unwavering support, and more prayers than I can count, I experienced what I can only describe as supernatural healing.
And with that healing came a gift I never thought possible... RUNNING!!
Nearly four years later, my doctors are still amazed by my recovery. Honestly, so am I.
When my doctor asked, "Kacey, why do you run now? You were never a runner - and now you've completed a marathon, multiple half marathons, and countless races?"
I laughed and said, " I like collecting medals?" (More than 30 since 2023!) Then I added, "I do it because I can. LITERALLY."
Every mile is a reminder that I was given a second chance. Every finish line represents faith, healing, strength, and a heart that keeps beating.
I'll continue to walk, run, skip, and do whatever my heart allows me to do - while raising awareness, supporting research, and encouraging others facing their own heart challenges.
Because our hearts are worth fighting for.
