Why I Walk
Heart disease has been part of my story for nearly two decades—but it has never defined what I believe is possible.
I was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in 2008 and received an implanted defibrillator in 2011. As a lifelong athlete, I had to learn what it meant to live with a heart that was different while refusing to stop living fully.
Today, at 50, I’m a father, competitive endurance mountain bike racer, cardiac athlete and heart disease advocate. I train, race and share my story for a purpose: to show others that a heart diagnosis can change your path without ending your possibilities.
I also know my story is bigger than me. Heart disease affects families, friends and communities everywhere. That is why I’m supporting the American Heart Association Heart Walk—to help advance research, education, awareness and the fight for longer, healthier lives.
Every mile I ride and every finish line I cross reminds me how fortunate I am to still be doing what I love.
If my story inspires you, I hope you’ll consider supporting my Heart Walk fundraiser. Every donation—no matter the size—helps move this mission forward.
Know your heart. Listen to your body. Live fully.
