My father was a WWII tail gunner on a B-24 Bomber and was shot down over enemy territory and held captive in Germany as a POW for a year. The stress he endured and the difficult post-war adjustment contributed to three heart attacks, the final one being fatal. He did not get to see all of his children become adults ... as I have. He did not get to hold all of his grandchildren ... as I have. He left us too soon. I served 30 years in the Army and maintained a relatively healthy life, until great Duke Doctors discovered a few years ago that I was in complete heart block due to a lung condition that spread to the heart. Consequently, Doctors inserted an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. I now continue to lead a normal life. Together, we can make healthier, longer lives possible for everyone.
