My name is Jessica Haygood. I am an RN on the Cardiac ICU. I have been employed by DCH since February of 2018. I left a job of 9 1/2 years to become a part of this unit. I have never wanted to be anything else other than a nurse. I have a significant family history of heart disease, stroke, and other factors that can affect me and my family. I truly believe that this is were God wants me to be. I am able to take care of the step-down patients and true ICU patients.
This unit became home to my father in law October 30, 2017. He had a massive heart attack and has suffered from deficits due to a delay in treatment. We spent many days and nights at his bedside not knowing if he would make it through. His life and the life of his family has changed tremendously due to the effects the heart attack had on his life. Although, this time was trying to him and family the nurses that took care of him made that experience that much easier. They were by his side through it all. This unit and the nurses played a heavy role in the change in direction of my life.
My father has heart disease. In July 2020, he was having shortness of breath, and some chest discomfort, acid reflux symptoms, so he thought. However, on a Sunday he started experiencing worsening symptoms. After making him go see Dr. Bobo that day, we decided he should go see a cardiologist. Dr. Anderson took my dad to the cath lab. He had a 98% blockage of his RCA, one of three main arteries of your heart. Because of early treatment and recognizing early heart disease symptoms my dad didn't have a heart attack.
I say this to let you know I don't ask you to walk or donate because its something else just to fundraise for. The heart walk is a walk to let the community know that we are raising money to help raise awareness for heart attacks and strokes. Having a heart attack or stroke puts you at a greater risk of having another.
With the help of research technology is getting better everyday to help find better ways of practicing medicine and interventions. DCH is where you or your loved ones may be treated for an unexpected life event. Wouldn't you want to know that you are being taken care of by the best nurses.
Not everybody knows signs and symptoms that will help alleviate deficits that can occur from delayed treatment. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read this. More information to follow.
On behalf of DCH and CICU,
American Heart Association Heart Walk March 6, 2021
DCH participates in this walk annually for the last 18 + years. Last year 25,000 plus dollars were donated. Activities begin at 8am and Walk begins at 9am. This will be located at Tuscaloosa Amphitheater.
If you choose to donate that is wonderful, my personal goal is 250 dollars and our team goal is 2,500 dollars. However, if you can't, there is another way to raise awareness, you may walk for free, all I ask is that you register under me and for my team. Your dedication to walking alone raises awareness. If you wish to donate or walk please feel free to call me at 205-657-3930 or my email is email@example.com I will answer any questions you may have. The donations are tax deductible.
from the Moment You Give
What will your donation do? I'm glad you asked. Every donation will help create big science, like science that created the artificial heart valve. The moment you contribute to the Heart Walk, you are contributing to, witnessing, and progessing lifesaving science. Lives can't be saved without you. Will you donate today?
