From the outside many of us look very normal, but on the inside many have no clue what is going on with someone's heart. On the outside, I look like a normal female, who maybe a little on the chunky side, but what many may not know, if I have a severe heart condition. I never knew I had a problem until approximately 20 years ago. Here's my story:
I was approximately 25 weeks pregnant with my daughter when my husband and I were eating at a local restaurant in Florence. All of a sudden, my heart started racing at over 200 beats per minute. I was unsure of what was happening, but one thing I knew was this wasn’t right. I went directly to the hospital and the next thing I knew was, I was being given meds to shock my heart and they had the paddles right next to me in case they needed them. It was just like a scene from ER on TV. I was so scared not only for myself by my unborn child as well. The next 15 weeks, I went to the cardiologist and was closely monitored and was diagnosed with SVT. They said I may or may not have any episodes but to keep an eye out on it. SVT is caused by the misfiring of the electrodes of your heart. They explained it to me like the spark plugs of your car.
Fast forward 2 years later, I was pregnant with my youngest son, I almost immediately started having SVT episodes again. It was a long pregnancy and I couldn’t even walk up the steps of my house without having an episode. The next 9 months, I was monitored and placed on medications to help prevent episodes. 2 weeks after delivering my son, I had cardiac ablation to help fix the “cardiac electrodes” of my heart. I am happy to say, this has worked for the past 17 years. I have had some episodes, but I have figured out how to deal with it. I have even completed three ½ marathons in the past 17 years.
I walk because I know that with every step, I’m making a difference in someone’s life. And when combined with a million other Heart Walk Heroes across the nation, we have an even greater impact toward curing heart disease and stroke. Will you be a Heart Walk Hero with me?
