I walk because heart disease has touched my family in profound ways. I walk in memory of my dad, and in honor of my mother-in-law. But beyond personal reasons, I walk because I believe in supporting the important work the American Heart Associaton is doing right here at home in Wilmington, NC.
I walk to support the mission of the American Heart Association’s Cape Fear Chapter—to save lives, fund lifesaving research, and expand education and prevention right here in our own community.
In Wilmington, the AHA is doing just that. The AHA is helping train thousands in Hands-Only CPR, advocate for healthier school meals, and place life-saving AEDs in public spaces. These programs matter. In fact, 90% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital don’t survive—but CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. That’s the kind of change we’re walking toward.
Funds raised through the Heart Walk help bring those tools, technologies, and educational resources to life—not just nationally, but here in Cape Fear. From supporting local food access programs to improving maternal health outcomes to launching school-based heart health education, the AHA’s impact is all around us.
Walking may seem small, but it leads to something powerful: hope, health, and a better future. Please consider joining our team or donating to the American Heart Assocication!
