I am participating in the Heart Walk for my amazing niece Abigail Lee!
Abigail’s heart journey began with a prenatal screening where doctors discovered she had a severe heart defect. Abigail was born with hypo-plastic left heart syndrome and would undergo two major open heart surgeries within her first year at MUSC Children’s Hospital.
As Abigail grew into her toddler years, she needed another open heart surgery, however, doctors discovered she had leukemia. Abigail spent the next eight months beating cancer.
Abigail continued to remain cancer free and underwent her third open heart surgery when she was six years old. Just two short years later, her heart began failing. She needed a heart transplant!
In 2019, she received a new heart! The heart transplant changed Abigail’s life! It’s been five years since Abigail’s transplant and her heart is still doing amazing! She’s a healthy teenager who is thriving!
