Heart Disease is the #1 Killer of Men and Women in the World. There is so much that can be done to attack it - preventing it from ever happening.

Team Huggy Bear is the 2018 Miami-Dade Heart Walk Community Team Champion - and we are  looking forward to 2019!

Team Huggy Bear is in honor of Ryan Patrick Carrigan.

A beloved best friend, partner, son, brother, and uncle, to all who knew and loved him. And to his best four legged friend, Ace.  Ryan had the appearance of a cover model of Men’s Health and Fitness Magazine, but with a glow that could only come from the inside. He was someone who could be counted on at all times, and someone who always put others before himself.

Ryan led his life with honor, love and integrity - he was angelic, and everything one could hope to be in their lifetime in the type of person he was. On June 29th, 2018, on what should have been any other normal evening, Ryan lost his life suddenly to atheoscerlotic and hypertensive heart disease. It was later learned, there had been warning signs he had been dismissing, not understanding they were signs of heart disease for the past 12 months: jaw pain, chest tightness, nausea, light headedness, flu-like symptoms. He had also been hiding heart burn medicine. In Ryan's final minutes, he had googled symptoms of a mini heart attack, and also, symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (he had an upcoming work trip) - and it is believed, he settled on the latter.

Ryan's heart diseases had been caused by a genetic condition - Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) - the most common life threatening genetic condition that there is, affecting 1/250 people.

Only 10% are diagnosed and treated properly (It is 100% treatable - with daily medications - the same way someone with Diabetes is dependent on insulin - the same goes for someone with FH - but the consequences don't appear in days, they appear in years -  and are as equally as catastrophic).

For someone with FH - daily medications are LIFE. Without them: sudden cardiac death, heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, and blockages throughout the body are the consequences - often striking in the prime of lives.

Ryan would want to save every person who doesn’t realize the devastating effects FH can have, or who don't realize they have it.

And for the signs of heart disease to be much more mainstream: It is not just left arm pain/chest pain (Ryan never had either).
