2023 Cedar Valley Heart Walk
Kemper Kleiss, 5 years old
Lawler, IA
Born with Tricuspid Atresia
Kemper was diagnosed with Tricuspid Atresia with a VSD and ASD 24 hours after she was born. She received great care at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital her first few days and then we were discharged home.
Her condition requires 2-3 open heart surgeries, but she was lucky to only need 2 of those. At 4 1/2 months old she had the Glenn surgery done and then at 3 1/2 years old, she had the Fontan surgery. Between those big surgeries, she had multiple appointments in Iowa City as well as at her cardiologist in Waterloo.
She has dealt with this like a champ! Whether it is open heart surgery, catheter procedures, blood draws, hospital stays, etc. she keeps going strong. She is loved by two older brothers that keep her on her toes and probably keep making her stronger. She has exceeded our expectations in dealing with the condition and during each obstacle she has had to endure.
Kemper will turn 6 in March and loves her Iowa State Cyclones, dancing, gymnastics, riding her bike, and swimming.
It only takes a few steps to save lives like Kemper.
