Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the United States, with stroke close behind at #5.
We walk together to honor our father, uncle, brother, and friend John McHugh.
John is an avid athlete; a multiple Ironman finisher, 100-mile bike ride aficionado, and wrangler of 4 sons. What was supposed to be a routine ECG and calcium screening at his annual primary care appointment turned into heart catheterization showing an 80% occlusion of the left main artery. Even after a triple bypass just this January, John is already back to work and just completed a 190-mile bike ride for Pelotonia alongside his wife, Michelle.
John's story is one of importance, as it highlights how heart disease can affect anyone, even those "doing things right." It highlights the influence of genetics on our heart health, and highlights resilliency of the human spirit. Importantly, John's story shows us how important it is to live by Carpe Diem - something he excels at.
The Heart Walk is a time of celebration, joy, and inspiration. It's an event that brings people together to support one goal - a world free of heart disease and stroke.
