Five years ago I collapsed at my desk while at work. Although I do not remember much, I have heard that I caused some workplace commotion among my co-workers! I was rushed to a local hospital where I was diagnosed with an ascending aortic dissection and given a 2 percent chance of survival! Soon after, I was flown by helicopter to the University of Chicago where I underwent a nine-hour surgery.
Looking back, I realize that I disregarded (some may say disdained) regular doctor visits. Even knowing that I had high blood pressure, which I learned first-hand is a main contributor to aortic dissections, I did not take annual checkups seriously. What I did not realize was that by putting off these visits, however inconvenient, I could have left my family without a wife, a mom, and eventually, a grandma.
I have supported the American Heart Association ever since as they play a crucial role in reducing deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases. They work tirelessly throughout the community by teaching hands-only CPR and providing prevention education. The American Heart Association also plays a vital role in funding cardiovascular research.
