I walk to raise money for the AHA in support of their efforts to educate our communities on cardiovascular disease. In 2021, I noticed my dad reaching for his chest as he was walking up an incline outside. My mom said he had recently shared having “something in my chest” that he later described as a discomfort. This ‘discomfort’ was brought on during physical exertion and emotional distress.
Given my clinical background working in cardiology, and in healthcare quality, I urged him to go see a cardiologist and have a stress test. During the stress test, he experienced the same ‘discomfort’ in his chest. He didn’t describe it as pain, but it was the same feeling that ultimately caused him to have further testing. Long story short, Dr. Zawacki and the amazing cardiovascular care team at IU Health Bloomington took excellent care of him, and in my opinion, prevented him from having a massive heart attack by placing a stent in his LAD.
After attending over a year of Phase II and Phase III Cardiac Rehab at IU Health Bedford Hospital, my dad takes his medications as directed, knows his numbers, and routinely exercises. I am forever grateful that he took control of his health so he can enjoy his six grandkids.
