My son is my Why. At four months old Jake was with diagnosed with an irregular heart beat and two holes in is heart. After further testing he was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM).
DCM is one of the cardiomyopathies that primarily affect the muscle of the heart. It is a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged causing it to have a compromised ability to pump blood effectively. Overtime the heart muscle begins to dilate, stretch and become thinner, causing the inside of the chamber to enlarge. This leads to a weak heart and possible heart failure.
Jake continues to live his life like your average 12 year old boy and is doing amazingly well despite DCM.
The cause of DCM often isn't know but with organizations such as the American Heart Association and talented medical personal we are hopeful that a cure is in our future.
